Education

Sophomore International Studies and Spanish major at James Madison University

Experience

My name is Grace White and I am a sophomore at James Madison University. During all four years at high school, I was involved in a tutoring program for my peers. I spent free period and zero period (at the school where I attended this was a period of 45 minutes before the first class) helping various students improve study techniques and general understanding of subjects such as Math, Spanish, and English. In addition to peer tutoring, during my senior year, I volunteered in a tutoring program for elementary students- both English speakers and non-English speakers. My SAT scores were a 690 in critical thinking and a 600 in math. Though I did not take any AP tests, I dual enrolled in AP classes for college credit. In high school, I was initially approached by a teacher in order to tutor a specific student. But since then, I have become very attached to tutoring programs. I believe that tutoring provides a wonderful opportunity for students who may need a little extra help or students who have a hard time paying attention in class. Of the students I have tutored so far, most of them needed someone to explain the course material a different way. In class, a teacher must pick the most efficient teaching method which, unfortunately, does not always allow for effective learning in every student. As an International Politics major, I am often called upon to take a different perspective on any given subject. This learned ability is helpful in activities, such as tutoring, as it allows me to think outside the box and find new ways for a student to learn something. In this way, tutoring is beneficial for both the student and myself, as I have the opportunity to apply one of my majors in a real life situation and it provides the student with a new way to solve a problem or learn material. As of now, I am taking Spanish (Spanish is my other major and I am a competent speaker), Japanese, Political Geography, Economics, International Affairs, and Psychology. However, I have in the recent past taken a few English and Math courses. Education is something that has always been of great value to me. I firmly believe that education can lead not only to a more productive life, but also a more enriched life. I also believe that tutoring is a means by which a student can find help to reach their goals for education.
