Experience
Hello! As an english and education major I want to be a tutor because I believe it would be good practice for me, as I would like to be a teacher in the future. I also feel it is important for students to feel comfortable writing, especially because in college there is a lot of it, and I would like to help them get to a state of self-assurance in the area. In high school I did tutor a little bit in an Algebra 1 class, however I did not at the time, nor now, feel comfortable helping people with their math because I am an English person. Despite the fact that I was not the most qualified to tutor math, it did help me learn how to bring a subject down to someone's level and help them back up so that they can do it themselves in the future. I have also often times helped my peers with their papers to make sure they are fit to be turned in. In high school I took IB English and on the test I scored a 5, which exempted me from Writing 103 my freshman year at JMU. I also took IB History, which on the test I received a score of 6 which also exempted me from taking US History here at JMU. Although I have not taken a history course since high school, I help my brother with it when I am home, and I still love history so I can also help with that. I am currently taking a Texts for Teachers course in which we read plays and poems relevant to middle and high school students. I am also in a Foundations of American Education course in which we learn about different educational philosophies in order to become the best teachers possible.
